Auckland Overview
Tamaki Makaurau is the Maori name for Auckland. Auckland has a rich Maori culture and visitors can experience this history at the Auckland Museum or sail on the harbour in a traditional sailing waka.
Today, Auckland is a vibrant multi-cultural city of approx 1.4 million people. It is surrounded by water with 2 harbours, the Waitemata and the Manukau Harbours so the sea is a vital part of resident’s lives and recreation.
Previously nicknamed the City of Sails, it is easy to see why on any day of the week. The CBD is located right onto the Waitemata and the waters are sheltered by a number of islands in the gulf: Rangitoto, Waiheke and Great Barrier.
